WHAT IS "CE MARKING"?A CE Mark is a symbol that’s affixed to your product labeling to indicate that it does in fact meet the essential requirements of the applicable European “New Approach” Directive(s). The European Union adopted these Directives in 1985 and created the CE marking in order to indicate that a product complies with European health, safety, and environmental requirements. Assessing your product according to the Directives is a business must for manufacturers that export products throughout the 27+ countries of the European Economic Area (EEA). According to the Directives, every member state must accept CE Marked products without requiring any further testing or approval in relation to these requirements. Prior to these regulations, each country in Europe had their own individual laws governing product safety. This created a difficult and confusing environment for manufacturers who wanted to sell products throughout Europe. Since the introduction of the CE mark and the relevant directives and standards, safety requirements are now significantly harmonized throughout Europe. All products imported into the EEA must now be assessed according to these Directives, and if necessary, tested according to Harmonized Standards that ensure compliance with the intent of each Directive. The penalty for not complying (or for not applying the CE mark correctly) include heavy fines, product recalls, barring future sales in the EU, and even imprisonment. Obviously, manufacturers must take the CE mark process very seriously, because the EU does! Does my product need the CE Mark? The odds are that it probably does! Most of the products imported into Europe require the CE Mark. If the product falls within the rulings of at least one of the CE marking directives and is not specifically excluded, then it must be CE marked. Because the directives cover such a large range of products it is not practical (or possible!) to write a list of all the included and excluded products here. Below are some (but not all) of the groups of products covered by the EU directives…
